文化財の研究、保存、修復などの研究を行う施設ですが、一般向けにもエントランスロビーでの研究結果の展示(無料)、黒田記念館、レクチャーなどあるようです。
ビデオ、写真、実物の展示で日本画に用いられる和紙の材料、仏像彫刻に用いられる種々のオリジナルなノミなど展示していました。
現代の科学的調査から、それらを用いることが仏像や日本画の彫り方、見え方の理にかなっていることや、今もそれらを支えてくれている刃物、和紙の店があることは興味深いです。
