I was a client of Doug Shively’s for a few years. His last year at the firm, he had one foot out the door. They hurriedly prepared my return, mostly using interns, temps, or others not skilled for a complex return. Their work was done poorly. I vastly overpaid due to their haste.

The next year I meet Bart McCorvey, and he spent more time bragging about how much it cost to become a partner and when his name will be in a prominent position, than discussing my taxes. He said I didn’t need to fill out the tax planner and they “just scan everything”. So, he only briefly glanced at my paperwork. I emphasized my estimated income was not accurate. Mr McCorvey ignored that and plowed ahead. This firm had me pay THREE TIMES what I should have.

Finally, I used McCorvey for some consultation and advice-he gave me some very inaccurate information that I had to disregard. His knowledge of 1031 exchanges and similar vehicles was not only wrong but would have been a liability.

Fast forward to 2023. I call a week before the tax deadline to make an appointment and they tell me I’m out of luck due to the looming deadline (somewhat understandable). After the deadline was extended I asked about the credentials of the new tax preparer Randy Azar. Turns out he is not a CPA. An employee he hasn’t passed the CPA tests yet but, he would any time. Also, the CPA testing is just the same as for an enrolled agent (false). When I ask if there was a CPA in charge or overseeing Mr.Azar’s work they mention Mr Shively “helping out”. Although, his license in California has expired.
So I ask about Mr Klatt, the only CPA employed there, according to their employee. They tell me he only does work related to homeowners associations. I had seen enough!

My new CPA (not an Enrolled Agent like Mr. Azar but a CPA) did my taxes efficiently and with attention to my unique situation and input. The amount of money Inouye, Shively Klatt & McCorvey cost me through their incompetence has me considering legal recourse. Would avoid and do your due diligence regarding their credentials, certification, and experience. Their short-term staff issues became an expensive, long-term problem for me.
