Their Publications division and canteen offer a preview into how rotten our national institutions are despite rhetoric to the contrary. Publications division inside the entrance is nothing but a small room with an extremely narrow opening (probably 6 inches by 6 inches) resembling a prison ward security room. The person there gives a paper with a list of books available. Many books in the single page list are out of stock. After selecting a few books this person took almost 40 minutes to prepare bill and said he only accepts cash. So much for PM's digital advocacy, which proves to be a farce even in central govt organizations. And then canteen run by this NIN, which I was told is open for public, is a scam. When I went to the canteen, there are just a few persons in the canteen, I enquired about the menu and tried to order something but was told that I had to get a token from outside canteen. After going to this place where they're supposed to sell tokens, which is another small prison booth with a very narrow opening, but the only difference this time is it's closed. I was told that I had to wait until the person to sell tokens arrives. When would that be (it's the peak lunch hour), they don't know, they asked me to wait in line until this person arrives. But there are only 1 or 2 persons there, they told me I have to wait in line. Waiting in line for considerable time seems to be the essential prerequisite for getting a token and food in the canteen, that's the feeling we get. I just left without having anything. The only point I understood from this extremely disturbing experience is that these central government organizations go to extreme length to make any interaction with public very cumbersome unpleasant as much as possible so much so that you regret having gone there in the first place and firmly decide not to go there again. No one knows what goes on inside the big building but the small prison booths for selling books and food at National Institute of Nutrition and their extremely customer-unfriendly unnecessary procedures make one ask what kind of persons are running these white elephants and what for, at such enormous expense to the taxpayer.
