So sad to not get even basic information after my mother’s stroke and to be treated poorly by staff on the phone when advocating for my mom and our right to receive test results. It’s astounding that people working with brain injury have so little skill in communicating with the patients and families experiencing them. Listen up providers: if you do a test on an aphasic person and do not communicate them to a family member/healthcare representative YOU DID NOT FINISH your job and furthermore the test is MEANINGLESS because there are no actionable steps for follow-up and the family learned nothing. But you all got paid anyway so you don’t seem to care. The next time someone does you the favor of giving you feedback you’d do well to listen rather than getting defensive, making excuses and blaming the already-stressed daughter of a patient. It’s not your patients’ jobs to take care of your feelings! You dropped the ball big time. Own up, show compassion for people going through medical crises and do better. All your “expertise” means ZERO quite literally if you can’t do that. Who’s up for training these people in patient counseling and education and reminding them to read chart notes on who to contact with results?
